Pre-Diabetes, They Don’t Count Calories Like They Used To
By Douglas Hunt | March 16th, 2010They don’t mark packages pre-diabetic beware. I’m out looking for a treat in Von’s market when my eyes land on a periwinkle blue and maroon package with a see through front pane. Inside the package, staring out at me, sat a sassy pastry wildly flurting with every passing shopper.
I looked around to see if I was still in the diet food section of the store, I had to be sure I hadn’t drifted subconsciusly into the bakery area and was staring at an untouchable.
I was thrilled to find I was indeed still in the diet food section of the store. Well, since the item is in the diet section it must be okay, so I immediately tore off the wrapping and took a bite.
You would have thought I would look at the lable before I took a bite of this little gem, If you thought that you don’t know me. I like the bad news after a good meal. But, a tiny peek at the lable was relaxing because the amount of protein and fat were balanced – no reason not to eat it now, right? And I would of – had I not had this reasonable side of me. I looked. OH MY GOD – 70 calories. Where are all the zeros?
I did not recognize the brand on the label but there was a phone number in small, almost unreadable print. I wondered if the bakery would be willing to share the secret of how they did it – all that taste, the aroma, the sweetness, and with only a token of calories.
The young voice that answered the phone sounded like someone’s daughter, she had such a youthful voice. She was the wife of the baker, they were two years old and doing great with the product that I was investigating.
No, she wouldn’t tell me their formula, but she did answer my question about the method she used to determine the calorie content. She had found a book that discussed the calorie content of foods. She read it and made a guess.
By all safety standards, this product was ready to be consumed, and likely will be by all who choose to believe anything that’s in print.
This ia a personal story that is true and unexaggerated. Large food corporations use outside laboratories for food analysis. Regional and smaller companies get along with less. The point: when it come to diabetes and even prediabetes, the stomach can easily blindfold the eye.
Even with pre-diabetes, to avoid the road side bomb calorie traps you may need adiabetic meal plan #1
